Homemade Twinkie Treats

When Hostess declared bankruptcy and the factory stopped making Twinkies, Dave decided to purchase and surprise me with an official Twinkies baking set.

I started a search for recipes for homemade Twinkies on the internet and there are plenty of options out there.  For our first batch, I decided to use the recipe in the booklet that was included in the set. The recipe in the booklet is your basic homemade yellow cake and the filling is a marshmallow fluff based filling..  To celebrate the first day of 2013, I decided to make Twinkies or Twinkies shaped treats.

I followed the directions in the booklet and we definitely made Twinkies Shaped Treats. The canoe pan works great and the cakes did not stick.  The recipe stated it made 8 boats.  8 giant sized Twinkies treats. A more authentic size would have been to make 16 boats.  The filling made per the recipe is too think to pipe into the cakes with any ease, the consistency of butter cream, which is too think.

Dave says that a sponge cake recipe would be closer to an authentic Twinkie and the filling will have to be thinner to easily pipe into the treat.  I will continue my search for recipes.

While the Twinkies Shaped Treats we created are yummy, they will spike your blood sugar if you are not careful.  All in all a pleasant experience, but the quest continues for authentic homemade Twinkies.
